#OTD (September 12) in 1980, Stevie’s reggae-soul masterpiece “Master Blaster (Jammin’)” was released as the lead single off Hotter Than July. The song is Wonder’s touching tribute to his friend and fellow black pop legend Bob Marley. The two clearly had a lot artistically and temperamentally in common, with their innovative songwriting genius, huge international commercial crossover appeal, intense religious faith, desire for worldwide love, peace and racial harmony. The piece was composed by Wonder and recorded at his own Wonderland Studios in LA and had him on Clavinet, Fender Rhodes, Organ, lead and background vocals. It was a major hit spending seven weeks at #1 on the Billboard R&B singles chart, reaching #5 on Billboard’s Hot 100 in the fall of 1980 and peaking at #2 on its UK counterpart. A true Stevie Wonder all-time classic.
