Alcohol isn’t ever the only issue in families where a parent drinks too much, it affects many areas of life. This could be financial insecurity, where a significant amount of income is spent prioritising alcohol, basic needs like food and clothes may not be met. With promises broken children are left feeling unloved, as though they are not enough and that they come second to the drink. When behaviour is unpredictable, it can be a very confusing environment for children to grow up in, drinking may be denied and behaviour covered up, it can also affect a child’s friendships, not wanting to bring friends over, not knowing what awaits them at home. With alcohol being the priority, children often miss out on the nurturing they need to help with their self-growth, identity and struggle to set boundaries in the future. Many children may not experience obvious forms of abuse, but suffer from neglect or a chronic lack of the little things which are so crucial to the wellbeing of us all. Some are exposed to rage, violence and abuse on a daily basis, which become part of the unpredictable and inconsistent environment in which they live. Something as simple as a one-time encounter with someone or an organisation can make a big difference for a child. The key to helping is to be able to recognise the nature of the child’s family life. Being able to listen, understand and support will make a difference.
