Today @yoyofirestone’s special is streaming on Peacock. For the past 1.5 years, she has been teaching comedy to a class of senior citizens. Every Monday morning at 10am, she and 20+ seniors get on a Zoom, and just laugh and joke for an hour. The joy and sense of community this has brought all of them (Jo included) is immeasurable - especially in the midst of a pandemic. It gives them all something to look forward to, a fun way to start the week and forget about the stuff happening in the world. This special follows Jo and the seniors as they meet in person for the first time - they do a class, interviews, and then take a party bus to their first live stand-up show. It is hilarious, magical, and heartwarming. I’ve watched it 25 times and I think I’ve shed a tear at the end every time, when one of the seniors delivers one of the most eloquent messages I’ve ever heard about the importance of laughter. Please watch it - it’ll make you feel good. And please spread the word. Tell a friend. Watch with your family, your grandparents. Word-of-mouth is the only way we’ll get people to see it. And I guarantee you will love it. Oh, and if you’re wondering, Jo still teaches the class every Monday. She has truly bonded with these people. And I can say that it has made all their lives richer. She’s an amazing, funny, and generous person. And if you watch the special, I know you’ll agree.
And thank you to director Julie Miller, editor @dannyscharar, and @katiehockmalones, @mrdineen, and @talia.levy for helping make this happen.
