The film Ambulance For Monuments: Saviour of Ruins in Transylvania was announced as a winner at the German National Committee for Heritage, the highest recognition in the field of heritage in Germany.
The film was broadcast on the Arte channel last year, with producers spending a week capturing the brilliant work of the programme which was launched in 2016 with support from The Prince’s Foundation.
Ambulance For Monuments, by Asociatia Monumentum, brings together talented craftspeople with a ready supply of tools, equipment and materials. The initiative also trains young experts and craftspeople at a local level, ensuring the sustainable and future maintenance of the buildings, addressing a problem that is present not just in Romania but in many other countries throughout Europe.
The jury stated: “In their contribution, the author and her team succeed in a realistic depiction of the preservation of monuments at the grassroots level, which appears unspectacular and has to do without any major tools, but is nonetheless inspiring.
“More than 150 medieval fortified churches characterise the image of the villages in Transylvania, seven of which are @unesco World Heritage Sites. The film shows in an exemplary but very vivid way how tedious it is to save the fortified church which is threatened with decay.
“Young, committed craftspeople, architects and volunteers, Transylvanian Saxons and Romanians are trying very pragmatically to secure at least the building fabric and to save the churches for a future in which one may possibly have a usage concept.”
Congratulations to everyone involved in the project, from everyone at The Prince’s Foundation.
