馃搷 Reine, Norway.
The brightly coloured wooden huts which are a distinctive feature of the Lofoten Islands are called a Rorbu (singular, or Rorbuer plural).
The Rorbu cabins were originally built for fishermen along the shoreline, often on poles in the water, allowing easy access to boats beside the cabin. The colour comes from red fish-oil paint which was the cheapest and most commonly used paint at that time.
Many of the Rorbu cabins you can stay in today are the genuine cabins, though they have been renovated to provide the comforts that travellers expect today. Visiting the Lofoten Islands and staying in a Rorbu makes for an already extraordinary experience even more distinctive.
