Randolph school helped kick off the summer Chalk Art Protest with a conversation on Intersectionality & identity. Elementary-aged kiddos and their educators showed up with curiosity, vulnerability, and creativity. We talked, we chalked, we shared and connected. It was a really lovely afternoon. Keep in mind this was back in May. Pre-Roe V. Wade overturn. Elementary kids had many thoughts on the topic even then. Shout out to the parents and teachers around them who have been having many open talks on these subjects. The entire day they reminded us, adults, how children have the capacity and desire to have deeper conversations on systemic issues. They know these systems impact them and their mental health. I love this younger generation and the craving for knowledge and dialogues. We talked anti-racism, Stop Asain Hate, Black Lives Matter, Trans rights, immigration (where you, your parents, or grandparents are from), LGBTQIA+, language, culture, privilege, intersectional identities (ones we see and hidden ones), allergies, history...the list goes on. And how understanding your own identity is essential in your activism work. At one point, I said, “ it’s okay to be angry. Know the message you want people to learn, so they don’t only learn anger,” a kid shouted back, “anger is bad.” And I shouted back, “we have a lot to be angry about, and we should be angry about it; it’s a matter of what you do with that anger.” Chalk is just one form of expression. I’m here for many expressions of anger and grief. The little littles 3+, when asked what is important to them, unanimously shouted “MY MOM,” so they chalked to their mothers, and it was beautiful. #peteseegerstamp #stampouthate #educators #chalkart #protest #blm.#environmentaljustice #transrights #abortionrights #tomyoldracistearth
