@juansharks This is shark ID Riley aka “The King,” and is the largest and only adult male tiger I have seen on the North Shore of Oahu in the last 20 years @oneoceandiving His behavior is unique from other tiger sharks. When he approaches things, he likes to curve up and lift with a bit more force than the others. He can be very pushy and assertive in general and likes to occupy the top end of the water column, being more dominant. We usually see him at the beginning of the tiger shark season and towards the end. I think he’s coming to the coastlines to meet the females for potential mating opportunities. In doing so, I believe he scares all of the other competing males out of the area. He doesn’t seem to mind the juvenile males but the juvenile males keep their distance when he is in the area. This is why we have nicknamed him the King; like lions, in a way, this area is his pride. His distinct ID mark is a scoop out of the back edge of his dorsal fin, which I think is a genetic defect we’ve seen in other smaller tiger sharks that he could be related to, like shark ID Gator. The more we understand sharks, the better we can safely enjoy the ocean. If it is mating or pupping season for sharks, have more alertness to give that animal space and leave the area. If your swimming in the ocean, use a mask and fins to know your environment. If you’re surfing and are above the water, try to know as much as possible about the animals that share that section of the reef to avoid a negative interaction. Natural seasonal migrations will affect things, but there are also so many human factors around fishing and harbors. The main thing to always keep in mind is that it is the shark’s home, and we are just visiting, and we need to treat the ocean as a wild place and adapt to that environment and not try to sanitize the ocean to make it safe for humans. The ocean needs sharks alive, and humans need the ocean. #weneedsharks #saveshatks #rewild #tigershark #oneoceandiving #oneocean #oahu #haleiwa Video by my beautiful mermaid wifey @oceanramsey
