There’s a genocide in Ethiopia and no one’s talking about it.
Tens of thousands of civilians have died, and The World Food Programme says that half of Tigray’s 5.5 million residents are in critical need of food.
Since the war began in 2020, the region has been cut off from the outside world, with no electricity or phones.
Ethiopia’s government has been accused of imposing an aid blockade on the region, which has impeded critical deliveries of humanitarian supplies. The conflict and violence in Tigray has resulted in millions of internally-displaced persons – often in living in squalid conditions. In this town of Adwa, the only drinking water available to families is from a contaminated river.
In August, the World Health Organization’s director-general, Tedros Adhanom Ghebereyesus, made an emotional appeal for his home region of Tigray – saying he has relatives who are starving, that he cannot communicate with or send aid to amid the government blockade.
He called it the “worst humanitarian crisis in the world” and questioned why it isn’t getting the same attention as the Ukraine conflict. “Maybe the reason is the color of the skin of people,” Tedros said.
