This year for Fannie Lou Hamer's 105th birthday on Oct 6th we are hosting a reflective online writing workshop in honor of the possibility of warriors at rest. Fannie Lou Hamer is famous for saying "I'm sick and tired of being sick and tired," an astute critique of how capitalism wears out the masses, and an especially relevant refusal as state structures abandon us all to COVID risk. But June Jordan, Fannie Lou Hamer's mentee and one of her biggest fans studied Hamer and watched her fight white supremacy in her community and also observed her with her "lion spine relaxed" in moments of rest.
I am not the only love warrior I know who has trouble truly resting. Even though I know that rest is necessary, it doesn't always feel accessible in shifting uncertain times. Or am I the only one who has noticed that even on the massage table my fists are clenched and I'm doing math about how many other warriors I can afford to buy massages for? So in honor of beloved Fannie Lou Hamer, especially as we learn about her through the loving eyes of June Jordan, we are going to support each other to write in a way that allows us to notice the barriers to our rest and our possibilities for deeper rest practices. I love you always. I hope to see you Thursday at 6:30pm EST to celebrate Fannie Lou Hamer. And if you can't make it at that time, don't worry, everyone who signs up will get the recording. And the workshop will be live-captioned for accessibility. Sign up link in bio.💜
