In a world hidden behind screens, the garden is a true luxury. It offers up the best the natural world, with the collaboration of those who tend to it. The purple terrace is one of the spaces. Named for the purple sage that blooms voraciously along the edge, it is the main walkway from the house to my office. It’s very special because it is one of the rare flat areas at Flamingo, and also a favorite place for birds to nest in the branches along the route so there is always a soundtrack of small birds singing. @arnaudcasaus originally designed it with soft, bouncy Japanese grass so I could throw a ball there with my dogs. If you walked from barefoot from one building to the other, touching your fingers on the foliage, your fingers and toes would smell wonderful all day - especially in the early morning when the dew was fresh and the Sage leaves were wet (it was this combination of this earthy Sage and the scent grass the inspired our first Sage candle). More recently, the water shortage in Los Angeles encouraged us to replace the grass with small red crushed rocks. On a hot summer day the stones sometimes bake and steam, and the smell of “heat” also very special. There may be a red heat candle on the way. And this is the kind of collaboration between nature and craft we love. X Richard (📸 by our beautiful friend @francoishalard )
