Enjoying a re-read of X-Men issue 205, the classic Barry Windsor-Smith and @chrisclearmountain story, Wounded Wolf. The beauty of Barry’s art is the pain and suffering poured into the flesh, which lends itself perfectly to our hero Wolverine who deals in both enduring and inflicting intense suffering. When I think of this story and of course his seminal work on the Weapon X tale masterfully realized in the pages of Marvel Comics Presents, I can’t help but think of the works of German Renaissance painter Matthias Grünewald. The way that Barry illustrated rivulets of blood, taut muscles and tortured flesh in these stories has always brought to my mind the sore riddled, torn flesh and gnarled appendages of Christ in the crucifixion portrayed by Grünewald’s in the Isenheim altarpiece.
