“Oral traditions and visual storytelling have always gone hand in hand to tell the journey of a people. From the news of slavery’s abolishment in the US, to the journey of finding and reuniting with family members, storytelling through many means was used to connect our people. Some tell stories through writings and dance. Others, through song and film. In Chicago, black artists choose to tell our stories through murals so that the future generations will know our legacy will persevere in our communities long after we’ve left.
