POST [MODERN FUNK] When I met @cedricmitchelldesign the Tulsa native and I instantly became deeply rooted friends seemingly instantaneously. Sure we share the same name, our birthdays are days apart, but what really bonded us was our shared love affair with the action of creation. Using our god given talents to share our feelings and messages with the world. Education through design has become the goal and provides the needed texture and discourse to our work. As black men, the day to day experience can be filled with confusion, anger, and quite plainly sadness. But this work, this art practice provides an arena for us to express ourselves in ways that, quite frankly, we are still trying and learning to find the words to describe. Ced’s work within itself is a practice of rejecting strict aesthetic rules, embracing individuality, celebrating uniqueness and otherness. Key components that have caused the postmodernist discourses to be exclusionary, appropriating the experience of “difference” and “otherness” while ironically still being rooted the master narratives it claims to challenge. He has captivated onlookers with pieces that again through the conviction of his approach make way for new conversations in a space, of glass blowing, that does not feature many creators that look like us. POST [MODERN FUNK] has taken Ced to heights he could have never dreamed of. He has overcome so much to be where he is today and presenting this garment to him that is filled with so much spiritual energy is a demonstration of the power that we have as black artist to transform things through our work.
