For the last 7 years I’ve served as the creative director, production designer & lighting designer for The Game Awards. It’s a really enjoyable show to design for because Executive Producers Geoff Keighley and Kimmie Kim are always looking to push the boundaries of creativity beyond the norm of TV award shows. As previously stated, I love experimenting with transparency, reflection, and distorting imagery and lighting. What’s new this year, is the addition of an onstage video floor (a design element I’ve previously worked with). Considering the floor screens, I wanted the video images to have surfaces to reflect off of. I created a pair of volumetric cluster composed of stringed mirrored spheres, framing the stage with video under them. The off stage doorways consisted of a wall of twinwall and x4 bars. This helped with sidefill light / back light as well as creating a means of distorting the x4 bars. The black gloss walls gave depth by reflecting the spheres creating a visual infinity. Over the center stage I had two clusters of mirror discs to reflect the image on the video below. Twinwall designs have been a recurring element I’ve explored for many years now. I decided to bring it back last year, since it’s been a while. With advancing technology it helps to build off of old concepts in elevating them to another level. Experimenting with various textures and materials helps me learn new ways to use them and for future projects. I'm blessed to be supported by an amazing team that are always willing to step outside the box and go on this creative journey with me. #thegameawards #2021 #productiondesign #stagedesign #lightingdesign #leleroybennett #sevendesignworks
