After the painted porcelain is fired in the kiln, the powdery enamels turn into iron reds, deep yellows, and greens. A common design painted with fencai technique is 萬 壽無疆 (wàn shòu wú jiāng) which represents boundless longevity. To this day, Fencai patterns are always hand-painted and a true labor of love and great skill.
