I'm making my reading comeback! 📚 This is the first fiction book I've finished since Owen was born and I LOVED it! The Dictionary of Lost Words is feminist historical fiction that follows Esme from girlhood through her lifetime of helping the Oxford English Dictionary be published (her dad is a lexicographer). It takes place in Oxford, so naturally it helped me feel closer to @cjbrandt! From a young age, Esme questions which words get defined and by who, realizing that words of importance to women and the lowest classes aren't included. She starts to collect and preserve these words. Meanwhile, the fight for women's suffrage is happening in Britain and Esme struggles to find her place in the movement. The page I've shared here is one of my favorite passages. Esme's mentor Ditte gives her advice that echoes #ImpactBook. It's a reminder that in movements for social change, maybe you don't have the extroversion to knock on doors. Maybe you get nervous being at crowded marches. Maybe you won't ever quit your job to work for a nonprofit. And that's okay! Because movements need all sorts of people, playing all different types of roles. From the front lines, to the back office, to the $20 donor. I'd obviously recommend #ImpactBook to explore what you can contribute to your issue of choice...☺️ And I'm open to your recs of the next fiction book I should read!
