There are certain people in this world who you love to be around. Their mere presence lightens the mood and makes everyone around them feel good. Rob was one of those people. I still can't believe that I am writing about him in the past tense. I learned of his passing yesterday. I am heartbroken. If I had to choose one word to describe Rob, it would be "beloved." He was BELOVED. Capital B. Capital rest of the word. He was beloved by everyone who met him. And it makes sense, because Rob was easy to love. Truly. I've spent the past 24 hours scrolling through hundreds of photos and videos of Rob. In every one, the joy on Rob’s face and everyone else’s face is palpable. This isn’t “smile for the camera”-type joy. This is pure, real, candid joy that he brought out in everyone he was around. It was easy to be happy around Rob. He was kind and he was positive and he was hilarious. And making Rob laugh was the best, because his laugh was 1,000 watts electric. (See slide 8) These past couple days have been tough, but I've taken solace in the fact that Rob knew he was loved. He knew. Because we told each other all the time. I remember after me and John Haskell saw "Avengers: Endgame" with him, we were going home, and I said something like "Love you buddy," and Rob replied "I love you 3000," calling back a line that Iron Man's daughter said in the movie. The callback really made us laugh. But it also rang true. For his birthday that year, we got him an "I LOVE YOU 3000" t-shirt, and since then, he wore it almost every time we all hung out. There was so much love there, and we told him often how much we loved him, and he did the same. I am so damn thankful for that. Wherever his energy is now - surely lighting up a room or a smile or the sky - I want to speak to him directly: Rob, thank you for your company, your loyalty, your good humor and generous laugh, thank you for making bad news seem not so bad and good news seem great, and thank you for always being fiercely and unapologetically YOU. You made a mark on everyone who knew you, whether it was for one night at karaoke or 10 years. You're a true friend. You're a legend. You will not be forgotten. I love you 3000. ♥️
