«It was like there was nowhere left to go after Songs in the Key of Life—and maybe there wasn’t. The album was more than just a masterpiece; it was the culmination of all of the potential that Stevie Wonder showed since his days as an 11-year-old prodigy. Musically, politically, culturally, it was the fulfillment of everything that Motown and the ’60s soul revolution had promised.» - ALAN LIGHT, Pitchfork

#OTD (September 28) in 1976, Stevie’s magnum opus Songs In The Key Of Life was released.
Upon its release, it became only the third album, and the first by anyone other than Elton John, to debut at #1 on the album charts. It’s also a masterpiece. That matters, too. Songs In The Key Of Life is one of those rare hyped-up albums that raises impossible expectations and then actually succeeds them. This is Stevie Wonder at his apex, creating truly timeless music. It should be no surprise that many great artists such as Elton John, Prince, Michael Jackson, George Michael, Whitney Houston, and Mariah Carey all praised the album for the landmark recording it is. Wonder’s heart and soul is in every breath and bar of this album and its influence will continue as long as musicians strive to inspire and push themselves.
