South Los Angeles has been the center of African American culture and heritage and is closely associated with the development of jazz, hip-hop, spoken word, assemblage art, and black cinema. In recent decades, the area has seen an influx of Latinx populations that have imbued the area with their own unique cultural traditions. South LA also has a deep history of Japanese culture, which is embedded in architecture in the surrounding area. By completing the Cultural Treasures of South LA survey, you help to uplift the cultural tapestry of South Los Angeles and highlight cultural landmarks, spaces, or people of all cultures you deem important to your neighborhood.
