Over-harvesting can easily happen with intertidal seaweeds that are smaller in size, like nori and sea lettuce. Here are regenerative foraging practices from @veldandsea to follow when wild harvesting seaweeds: 🌊 Be sure the sea you are collecting from is not polluted. 🌊 Collect at low tide, closest to the tide line as possible. A spring tide (new or full moon) gives you maximum time in an exposed intertidal zone. 🌊 Never pull seaweed off a rock, rather cut pieces off with a pair of scissors leaving its holdfast attached to the rock so that the rest of the plant may regrow. For kelp, only cutting the fronds allows the whole seaweed to continue growing. 🌊 Only cut 1/3 of the seaweed at the most. 🌊 Only pick seaweed for culinary use that is attached to a rock, don’t collect any you find floating or washed up on shore. 🌊 Only pick seaweeds that look healthy and clean. 🌊 Only pick what you need and use everything you pick! 🌊 Dont collect any unusual seaweed that is sparse in the rock pools, only what you see growing prolifically in the area. 🌊 Watch your back! Never have your back turned to the waves as you collect. On a stormy day or big swell, one wave can easily sweep you out to sea. 🌊 Only collect what your permit allows and never collect from a marine protected area. 🌊 Respect all life when you forage. Take care where you walk. 🌊 Pick up any litter that you come across. 🌊 Rockpools, intertidal zone, and kelp forests are sensitive ecosystems. Treat them with care and respect, being in these wild spaces evoke curiosity and fun! A beautiful place for gently exploring, learning and developing reciprocal relationships with the ocean πŸ’™ #wildfoodlove #veldandsea #nori #seaweeds #coastalforaging #beachforaging #beachfood #coastalfood #kelp #intertidal #rockpools #respecttheocean #respect #regenerative #foraging #foragedfood #forager #capetownlove
