“Alright. We might have reached that point where we lay on the floor for a moment....Cue Waterfall! Waterfall is a is a mix between a supported shoulderstand and Viparita Karani—-and an excellent option if you don’t have an accessible wall, or a neck that doesn’t like shoulderstand. This is an inverted asana that offers the opportunity to tap into the parasympathetic nervous system (think rest and digest here) inviting rest & regulation. The benefits of Waterfall are such that it gives our blood circulation a gentle boost toward the upper body and head, creating a rebalancing. Waterfall is particularly beneficial for times when experiencing stress, fatigue, & low energy (oh, hey world). An important note to not practice Waterfall if you are experiencing: Glaucoma, Hypertension, Sacral/Low Back Injury, or a Hernia. You will want to have access to a block (books will also work——really anything that can support the Sacrum with some height), and floor. WATERFALL HOW TO: Start by laying on your back with knees bent and both feet to the earth touching your fingertips to heals(much like preparing for Bridge Pose). Once your foundation is set lift hips and place block (wide way) or selected support to lift or elevate hips under tailbone, gentle setting hips down—-adjusting as needed. Asana invites the opportunity to tap into your bodies wisdom and what YOU need. Once your sacrum support is set extend legs to sky——legs over hips, ankles in line with knees and active toes (flexing or flointing) creating a waterfall effect of engagement through the lower body. This asana is active in the legs and relaxed in the torso. While there is some activation, Waterfall can offer deeply restorative quantities in its own way! Once leg foundation is set, gently offering the arms to fold open by side body with palms to the sky. Stay in Waterfall for as long as you would like. If you are newer to this practice 5 minutes might feel better rather than a longer time-span. Remember, this is an opportunity to check-in with yourself and what you need. This is an invitation for stillness, tending, and rest.” Thank you for this guided moment of #restorativeyoga @etlyoga.and.therapy 💓
