Artist Annabelle Adie describes her 1820s Montmartre apartment as her ‘antidepressant’ - an extension of her work and essential to her emotional wellbeing. ‘I have a conscious awareness that I am fighting depression every single minute of my life...I have found my creative work is one of the best ways to harness it,’ she explains. Her unique visual lexicon is expressed in fabric, light, colour and clay which she uses in multiple projects – commercial and artistic, personal and public. Annabelle admits to being abnormally colour sensitive and the palette she chooses for her home's interiors is mirrored in her clothes, artwork and even her lipstick. She'll often use a very strong, or even fluorescent hue, like exclamations, against an otherwise neutral background. When it comes to her ceramics, she works almost entirely in white out of “a need for purity and simplicity, in contrast with all the other effervescence of colour and texture". I interviewed and photographed Annabelle and her home in Paris for my book 'Bohemian Living: Creative Homes Around the World'. I realised when talking with her that while we came from very different worlds (she was born to a Scottish father and French-English mother and bounced between France and exclusive British boarding schools growing up, and I was a kid from Ballarat), we had other things in common. We both found that meaningful creative projects can drive depression into retreat and that our living environments help provide an important avenue to meet emotional needs. I'm sure these feelings ring true for many of the subjects in this book along with a number of subjects in my latest book 'A Room of Her Own', and perhaps even for you? You can explore more of Annabelle's world and work here: www.annabelleadie.com @thamesandhudsonau @thamesandhudson @kirsten_abbott @robynleaphotography #designwithcolour #bohemianliving #robynlea #robynleaphotography #ceramics #interiors #paris #france #ceramicart #art #bohemianinteriors #design #artistshome #artist #annabelleadie #aroomofherown #womenartists #artiststudio Photograph © Robyn Lea
