A word from your friendly neighborhood lesbian: Today I experienced my first instance of truly painful homophobia since living in Copenhagen. Sat outside Alice, having some ice cream with my girlfriend, whom I at one point kiss. We are met with an extremely angry woman who aggressively screams at and touches us- nothing new. The painful part was that the whole seating area goes quiet. Everyone is clearly listening, paying attention. Noone says anything. I handle the situation, (as I have many times before) and the woman leaves. There are no words of support, no encouraging looks. Everyone is looking down at their ice-cream, avoiding eye contact with us with the level of concentration reserved for escaping painful truths. Please, if you observe someone being told they do not belong to this world, the least you can do is remind them that they do. I feel let down, and isolated.
