Happy Martin Luther King Jr. Day, everyone. I recently was recommended to read “Letter from Birmingham Jail.” It is a beautiful piece of American literature and I’d highly recommend it if you haven’t checked it out. It’s not very long but there is so much power in it.
You might have heard these but here are some wonder quotes from Dr King:
“Intelligence plus character—that is the goal of true education."
“True peace is not merely the absence of tension; it is the presence of justice."
“Let no man pull you so low as to hate him."
"Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly."
"We must use time creatively, in the knowledge that the time is always ripe to do right."
"I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character."
Dr. King displayed moral courage. I see moral courage as one of the bravest and most honorable acts any individual can display. In our country, I feel there is a constant struggle between opportunists and those that display moral courage. In Los Angeles, where I live, I could throw a rock out my window and hit an opportunist but to find one person displaying moral courage would be much more rare. I struggle with it myself even if I’m always trying to do the “right thing”. I look up to people like Dr. King, Rosa Parks, Mahatma Gandhi and Nelson Mandela (to name a few) and I believe days like today are special because by honoring one person with moral courage we honor the moral courage inside us all.
Sending love, peace and joy to you all on this wonderful day.
