My car deserves a permanent spot on my timeline because she has been such a significant part of my personal timeline. Last night, I donated my 1995 Nissan Maxima to @habitatforhumanity. This car has been like The Giving Tree. She’s given all she can give & more, & it was time to let her rest & set her free. Clocking in at not even 90,000 miles, my Pop-Pop, who only drove her to the grocery store, barber & post office, passed her to me. He is one of the biggest reasons I pursued music, so it was a gift to keep him close in this way. I learned to drive in this car. We picked my high school friends up. We hydroplaned & spun out for the first time on the way to the Spongebob movie. I left her with my Mom while I was in college to use between cars. Then my car moved me in a January evening blizzard halfway across the country. A few years later we entered the next chapter by heading back to the east coast together packed with everything I could fit. She took me out of my small radius during the pandemic to breathe and clear my head against a different backdrop. She’s heard me & full carpools belt lead & EVERY background vocal along with the busted tape deck & radio more than anyone should ever have to. Backstreet Boys, NSYNC, Yellowcard, Dashboard Confessional, Queen, Newsies, Sum41, Linkin Park, Ani Difranco, James Taylor, Ben Folds, Nine Inch Nails, the Garden State Soundtrack, & every OC compilation. And lots of classical music -in traffic especially. She’s heard it all. She’s seen me excited for big change, new love, friend adventures, & first time parallel parking jitters. She’s seen me scared for big change, heartbroken, obsessively reviewing lyrics/melodies headed to gigs & decompressing in silence afterwards with a backseat full of gear. She’s taken me to visit family, both close & not so close, for joyous & somber occasions. She has embraced me in all seasons of life - tears & fears & feeling proud. I accepted all of her quirks & flaws just like she accepted mine. I know she’s just a thing, but she’s been a really good companion & long lasting constant to my family. Sad to see her go, but grateful for all she’s given & all she will give. 💙🙏🏼
