Love is always a risk worth taking. Olive was a sweet little lady who stole my heart the moment she trotted into my life six months ago. I imagined years of adventures together, but in our short time, she taught me how to love again after losing my dog Max in November. She was my comfort in a season when our city was literally on fire and the future felt so uncertain.
Olive’s story began far from here. She was rescued in Korea from a horrific dog meat farm where she’d been used for breeding. When she arrived, she was healthy, happy, and ready for her new life. A few months later we learned she had heartworms, and just 48 hours ago we discovered a mass on her spleen that was terminal.
I’m grateful I could give her love in her final months—something she had never known before. She was bright and curious, loved her walks, was so smart and eager to learn, and found joy in playing.
I often sang to her:
Pretty little Olive, I really love you.
Pretty little Olive, I’m dreaming of you.
Pretty little Olive, I’m so in love with you.
You are free now, my Olive girl—running with Jesus in heaven. I know you and Max are together, tails wagging, having the best time. Thank you, Jesus, for my Olive girl.
