MY VOICE EXISTS OUTSIDE OF NAIDOC & RECONCILIATION WEEK. Dear non-First Nations brands/labels, panels, podcasts, publications, influencers wanting to do lives/takeovers and other platforms looking for a Blak voice/face during these weeks, if you don’t amplify Blak voices the other 50 weeks of the year, I am not interested in your tokenistic gesture and slack marketing. As the offers have started rolling in, I want to remind you all that NAIDOC & RECONCILIATION week for a lot of us is one of our busiest weeks. We see people coming out of the woodworks all of a sudden wanting Blak voices and faces to talk on issues that are not specific to this week and we end up sharing my/our stories to a majority white platform/audience. One of my pet peeves is people/brands sliding into the DMs saying “we love your work...” while the profile/company doesn’t follow me, which seems like the bare minimum (when loving someone’s work) and a flat out lie in the quest to get your Blak voice/face. I find this tokenistic gesture highly offensive and slack from your marketing team and I find myself sounding like a broken record while answering the same questions (most that aren’t restricted to these weeks).
