It’s time for takeoff on the new AC40! 🚀 The brand new boat is designed to pave the way for the Women’s and Youth @americascup, and was recently seen tow-tested behind @emiratesteamnz’s Hydrogen-powered foiling chase boat ‘Chase Zero’.
North Sails started work on the #AC40 project straight after the 36th America’s Cup match. As you can imagine, there was a lot of work involved in setting the sail plan that was appropriate for the new boat. Our designers also needed to come up with a new set of loadings for the boat so the engineers could do their part. All of this was made possible with close interaction with the rest of the ETNZ design team, and of course, the use of the North Sails Flow/ MemBrain sail analysis software.
Joining North Sails in 1988, Burns Fallow is the lead sail designer for Emirates Team New Zealand and has been at the forefront of sail design for the Kiwi team ever since. He’s seen it all from hoisting sails mid-race in the IACC boats to hard wing sails on 72’ cats.
💬 Fallow dives into the sail inventory on the AC40: “The inventory consists of one double skin mainsail, and three jibs. All the sails are 3Di 880 Helix sails and pick up several features developed during the AC36 cycle. There are many features we worked on in the AC36 cycle that were new to sailing at the time. All this, plus so much more makes the AC40 a pretty cool project to have been involved with – and that is just in the sail package!”
