PhotoVogue Festival 2022 is coming! At BASE Milano from November 17 to 20. “The Next Great Fashion Image Makers”: today we introduce @elliotanderick (USA). Elliot & Erick Jiménez are two of the 40 artists selected for this exhibition through our first Global Open Call by an international jury among more than 30,000 images and 3.000 artists from 121 different countries! The open call is endorsed by all the editions of Vogue globally. The project that will be exhibited is titled “Entre Dos Mundos”. These images are part of the debut solo exhibition of Cuban-American twin photography duo Elliot & Erick Jiménez, titled Entre Dos Mundos, which features a suite of large-scale photographic prints. These images visualize through staged photographs the personification of deities and saints within Yoruba and Catholic syncretism, or Lucumí. Lucumí, also known as Santeria, is a concept enmeshed in the culture and spiritual life of many Cubans and Cuban Americans. Raised in a Cuban biracial family, Elliot & Erick were exposed to a variety of religious practices in Catholicism and Lucumí, on both sides of their family which illuminated them to the parallels and divergent tangents of the two spiritual worlds. Enslaved Yorubans of West Africa developed Lucumí in Cuba to continue practicing their traditional religion Isese, under the guise of worship of Catholic saints throughout Spanish colonial domination. Catholic saints became placeholders for Yoruba orishas, or deities, who themselves are icons for themes in the natural world, represented by colors. Lucumí went from a hidden, closed practice to an accepted part of culture in Cuban society that exists side by side with Catholicism and Christianity, despite the anti-clericalism of Cuban politics. Even though there is a population wide understanding and general tolerance of Lucumí in Cuban society, Catholicism is still used to mask Lucumí or Santero practices by some, as obscurity, mysticism, and at times, stigma, overshadow the religion.
