Concieved in dialogue with the sound installation which features a hundred poets who have faced persecution for their words, it brings together many of the poems from the installation including #FaizAhmadFaiz #IrinaRatushinskaya #Hadraawi #LiuXiabo #ZebUnNissa #AnnaBarkova #OsipMandelstam #Adonis #KimChiHa #AllenGinsberg #NazimHikmet #MahmoudDarwish #SawWai #WoleSoyinka and several others. The book speaks of the history of resistance and courage, of risks and of persistence. It includes new texts by writers who have written about their own experiences with incaceration or expressed their outrage over it. Among the writers included are Ma Thida (Myanmar), #BurhanSönmez (Turkey), Aly Cobby Eckermann (Australia), #DareenTatour (Palestine), #FatemehEkhtesari (Iran), and from India, #VaravaraRao, #DevanganaKalita, #NatashaNarwal, @GautamBhatia_law and others. It also features Salil’s interview with lawyer activist #SaraHossain and my interview with poet #MalayRoychoudhury The words flow in conversation with existing and new drawings and illustrations of this ongoing series of works from 2017. Like all books it has been a labour of love and been in the making for several years. The book stands for collaboration and support, often under extremely difficult conditions, forming a network of solidarities. This result is an anthology that speaks truth to power and is a testament to the community of words. Am very grateful to all the writers, translators, poets and their families for their generosity.
