Today marks 10 years since the massacre against the Sikh community at a gurdwara in Oak Creek, Wisconsin. A white supremacist opened fire, leading to the deaths of seven people, including six siblings, who had been preparing a communal meal. Their murders remain the deadliest attack of anti-Sikh hate in US history.
To honor the victims of the August 5 shooting, the gurdwara will hold a continuous 48-hour prayer service.
‘This anniversary means many things to many people. Some still feel painful loss and absence in their households and families ten years later. Others have come of age in the past decade, learning how to lead and finding their voice in the shadow of tragedy. And still others have joined our growing community and become a part of our continuing story,’ the organizers said in a statement.
