Protein is inefficiently utilised as energy because it produces more heat during metabolism than carbohydrates or fats do. Providing your horse with higher protein hay/feed during the winter is a great way of supporting their condition. Much like humans, horses need protein alongside a suitable exercise regime to build their muscular coverage and condition. During exercise the muscle fibres tear and break down, in a process called the catabolic state. Post exercise the muscles go into their repair phase, where they utilise amino acids (protein) as building blocks to repair and build muscle, known as the anabolic state. Without the right exercise regime alongside good quality protein, building muscle to support condition is inefficient.
