Reflecting further on Penn’s visit to Morocco 50 years ago, here is another portrait of a small girl from the town of Imilchil, bundled up in a handwoven cloak and “wrapped against the cold of this High Atlas plateau village,” as Penn later described the child in his 1974 travelogue, WORLDS IN A SMALL ROOM. Twenty years later, her penetrating stare reemerged in PASSAGE: A WORK RECORD, Penn’s 300-page retrospective monograph published in 1991. Throughout the trip, Penn’s working practice was to alternate between cameras loaded with black and white negative or color reversal film.
