Reflecting further on Penn’s visit to Morocco 50 years ago, here is another portrait of a small girl from the town of Imilchil, bundled up in a handwoven cloak and “wrapped against the cold of this High Atlas plateau village,” as Penn later described the child in his 1974 travelogue, WORLDS IN A SMALL ROOM. Twenty years later, her penetrating stare reemerged in PASSAGE: A WORK RECORD, Penn’s 300-page retrospective monograph published in 1991.
Throughout the trip, Penn’s working practice was to alternate between cameras loaded with black and white negative or color reversal film. While the portrait Penn selected for his creative pursuits was made using black and white photographic materials, a similar picture of this child was published as a color photograph in the article titled “The Veiled Mystery of Morocco” in the December 1971 issue of Vogue.
