This November, the future of one of St. Pete’s most iconic institutions will be on the ballot. The @dalimuseum has plans for a $55 million expansion, and because of its location on city-owned waterfront property, a change to the lease allowing construction must be put to public vote. Some key takeaways from the referendum: This is not a vote on funding the expansion, and The Dali is not using resident taxpayer dollars or city funding for the expansion. This is a vote on whether or not to amend The Dali's lease with the city to allow construction on the west side of the museum, in a portion of property currently home to part of the parking lot. The Dali says it has reached its maximum capacity for attendance, currently averaging around 400,000 guests per year, and this expansion would add 60,000 square feet of gallery, educational and community space. The majority of the funds for the project will come from the museum’s expansion fund, corporate sponsorships, and private donations. Additionally, in 2019, The Dali was awarded a Capital Project Grant of $17.5 million by the Pinellas County Commission, funded by the “bed tax.” Full story (with more information and renderings) by @bobcarskadon at the link in our bio. #art #museums #vote #stpetersburg #stpete #salvadordali #instaburg #igersstpete #tampabay #surrealism
