How to reapply sunscreen when wearing makeup is a common question I get. Here are some tips: First, I recommend using a stand-alone sunscreen as the final step of your morning routine before applying makeup. When it comes to reapplying, there is no single answer that is going to work for everyone, but hopefully these techniques are helpful: ✅ The best bet for sufficient SPF coverage is to reapply liquid sunscreen directly, or some people like using a sponge or beauty blender when applying over makeup. If you choose a lightweight, ultra fluid sunscreen it can generally be blended well. ✅ Clear sunscreen sticks are another good option. In the video I am using the Shiseido stick. SuperGoop Glow Stick is another. To get the labeled SPF a stick sunscreen should be applied in four passes on the skin. ✅ You can find a variety of makeup like products including cc creams and serums with SPF. These products will provide the labeled SPF so long as they are applied in an equivalent amount to a liquid sunscreen but these products may not look as good with that thick of a coating (so are often under-applied and don’t provide as much protection). ✅ There is also tinted SPF in the form of compacts and powders but again with these forms of SPF it requires a significant amount of product to get the labeled SPF. While I would not rely on them as primary SPF, they are a convenient option for a bit of additional coverage on the go. Reapplying every two hours is best practice but even us dermatologists acknowledge that sometimes we must settle for doing the best we can. If you are spending a significant amount of time in direct sunlight (outdoors or through windows) then I would encourage regular reapplication and use of a liquid or stick SPF. If you are not getting a lot of direct sun exposure and are applying sufficient sunscreen in the morning plus reapplying in some form during the day then I think you can feel pretty good. 🙌 #drkatiebeleznay #dermatologist #skindoctor #igskincare #instaskincare #sunscreen #spf
