Concluding our series looking back on Penn’s 1971 trip to Morocco, we place the final spotlight on an iconic image from this time capsule.
“We invited these mysterious guedra women to pose for us.... Those chosen sat, eyes fixed on the lens, enjoying the camera’s scrutiny yet themselves impenetrable, unhurried during the considerable time we spent together. The time I took with them as subjects gave dignity to their calling in the eyes of townspeople who passed by.”
– Irving Penn, reminiscing on the sitting in his 1974 travelogue, WORLDS IN A SMALL ROOM.
Shown here are both gelatin silver and platinum-palladium print types to illuminate the differences in tonal scale and image color of these two printing processes. Film footage from Penn’s wife Lisa is also included to reveal the extraordinary scene behind the photograph.
As Penn selected this portrait to feature prominently on the cover of WORLDS IN A SMALL ROOM, the image clearly captivated him as an important representative visual for his work not only in Morocco, but throughout his travels around the world as an ambulant studio photographer, documenting the fascinating people who joined him for a transformative experience in his open-air tent.
