Next to sunscreen, retinol is both my most recommended and most asked about product. So I figured I’d do a guide. This is primarily a resource for products I use and recommend. For tips on retinol use I have saved a bunch of my older posts in the “Retinoids” highlight on my page. Note: retinoids / retinol should not be used in pregnancy. Note 2: Differin is a great option but not OTC in 🇨🇦 so didn’t include in drugstore Drugstore: I like the RoC retinol capsules, the Olay Retinol 24 line, Neutrogena Rapid Wrinkle Repair, and Avene’s products with retinaldehyde (retinal). In the US Avene offers the RetrinAl line and in Canada you can find retinal in some of the AOxitive and PhysioLift products. Other drugstore options to consider include Neutrogena Pro Retinol, Indeed Labs Retinol Reface, CeraVe and in Canada the Reversa Retin(A)list and Marcelle Retinol Probiotic Serum. Sephora: Kiehl’s has two retinol products I really like. Their Daily Micro-dose Serum is a great option for retinol beginners or those with sensitive skin and they have recently launched a new Retinol Fast Release Serum which is a good step up. I have also used and liked the retinol products from Farmacy, Murad and Youth to the People (retinal). Inkey List is also a good affordable option to consider. For those looking to up their retinol game, I often recommend 1% retinols from Skinmedica, SkinCeuticals and Zo, though they do have less potent versions as well if you want to ladder up. Skinbetter AlphaRet gets lots of love from dermatologists in the US but is not available in Canada at this time. And of course prescription options can be considered. In Canada Adapalene is one option by prescription that is generally stronger than OTC retinol. In the US you can find adapalene (Differin) over the counter. While Tretinoin is the most well known prescription retinoid there are a number of others available so speak to your doctor.
