Love this quote because we get to choose what we value. We get to choose where we find meaning. And we get to define what qualifies as success for us. We live in a culture of disposability— one that prioritizes speed, status, appearance, etc... When we get caught up in that, we can lose sight of our values or the meaning of the things around us. Choosing to see the inherent value of things and give them meaning allows us to recognize the abundance already around us rather than see the gaps of discontent that marketing, brands, and social media would love to exploit to sell us more stuff. In the context of fashion, giving our clothes meaning and valuing them means that we will love them, care for them, and wear them for a long time. We will value the many hands that worked hard to craft the clothing and honor their work by not viewing the clothing as disposable. It means that whether the item is fast fashion, sustainably-made, or a cherished family garment, we will choose to extend its life as long as possible and find purpose for it, not giving into the cultural attitude that devalues it. It means that we prioritize our personal style and how clothes can be an expression for us rather than blindly following trends to keep up. It’s my hope that we each can approach our lives and what we choose to surround ourselves with with intention and individuality. That’s the beauty of life— we get to create and shape it with what’s available to us and that will look different for us all! 💛
