Today we celebrate the birthday of Lisa Fonssagrives-Penn (1911–92)—who was not only Irving Penn’s muse and wife of over 40 years (they married in 1950), but also a talented sculptor and printmaker who devoted extensive energy to this artistic calling during the latter half of her life.
While many are familiar with Fonssagives-Penn’s extraordinary and prolific modeling career, in her private life she was an intensely focused artist steeped in her creations—making works of art in a variety of mediums and materials, such as bronze and fiberglass, as well as producing a range of works on paper through the aquatint process.
In today’s commemorative post, joining this iconic portrait of the Swedish-born beauty are two examples of Fonssagrives-Penn’s work: Collision, a dynamic expression of form constructed in fiberglass (with the sculptor herself standing by its side, revealing its impressive scale) and Twist, a sculpture cast in bronze. More of Fonssagrives-Penn’s work can be found on the Instagram account dedicated to advancing her legacy:
