I’m also extremely honored I was asked to design the poster for it. From the Facebook summary: “The film chronicles the story of veteran Karina Lopez who, after learning about the disappearance of Vanessa Guillen at the Fort Hood Military base and her claims about being sexually harassed on base, created a viral post telling her own story of military sexual violence. Vanessa’s body would be found a few days after the post, which encouraged thousands of people to come forward with their stories of military sexual trauma (MST). While MST has been an issue for decades, Vanessa’s murder brought it to the forefront of the national conversation. With this renewed attention, activists and survivors have been able to push for reform in the ranks. The military has its own justice system, in which mostly non-lawyer commanders the ones who decided whether to prosecute most crimes, including sexual assault. This often leads to cases being mishandled and more often than not results in brutal retaliation for those who report. Survivors often regret having reported, and suffer severe mental health consequences. Late last year, Congress passed legislation to remove some power from commanders and take certain crimes to an independent body within the military, and hence have a more just process. These changes will take years to be implemented. But beyond legislation, culture in the military needs to change. So much of its culture is rooted in misogyny, and there is a profound lack of understanding of the gravity of sexual assault. And there is so much more work that needs to happen. This was a labor of so much hard work and love.
