As the opening ceremony for the Olympic Games in Tokyo takes place, we mark this occasion with a post featuring Irving Penn’s 1989 portrait of iconic American sprinter, Florence Griffith Joyner.
Flo Jo, as she was affectionately known, made history in the 1988 Olympic Games when she set world record times for the 100 meter and 200 meter races—records that still stand to this day, 33 years later. Amongst her many accolades, Joyner was named Time magazine’s Woman of the Year in 1988 and was inducted into the USA Track & Field Hall of Fame in 1995.
Both on and off the track, Flo Jo was well known for her fashionable personal style and, following her extraordinary athletic achievements at the 1988 Games, she remained a pop culture figure over the next decade. While Joyner’s life was tragically cut short in 1998, her bold legacy—along with her world records—lives on and continues to inspire the next generation of athletes.
This Penn portrait of Joyner showcasing the runner’s trademark fingernails was originally published in the April 1989 issue of Vogue magazine.
