In this confused and complex moment in the world I keep thinking about ash as an instructive material—what it abstracts, how it blackens space, the ways it disrupts and destroys but also allows for new forms of germination. A strange and wild site to explore these thoughts in the year ahead as a Pompeii Commitment Fellow in a cohort that includes myself, Formafantasma, Allison Katz, Miao Sing, Anri Sala, Rose Salane, and Sissel Toolas. I will be working on a poetic and art historical response, an opportunity to consider what geological failures can do to reframe our imagination of the worlds we transmit.
