When I say detail, I mean DETAIL Taking no less than 1340 hours of craftsmanship, the made-to-measure Dionysus Fragmented Jacket is a playground of luscious surfaces and is a testament of good technique. One focal point is the feather marquetry done to mimic the floral background, with some feather stems hand-curled and perfectly matched to shape. Its centers are drawn with gold ribbons, dotted with strass, and all tinted with oil paint for depth. A front panel includes a mural-like freehand drawing of human figures then hand painted and accented, while above it is a cut-out technique emphasized with cracks done in gold leaf. Hidden on a side is a cascading curtain of gold glass beads, that when moving swings like glistening scales. A panel at the back — perhaps my favorite one — reuses old jewelry parts which was then hand painted with miniatures in oil, all with different typical Filipino characters as subjects. Shoulders are sharply structured to a 90-degree angle, all thanks to an inner scaffolding system made of boning and molded shoulder pads. The barrel sleeves are all done in one piece each, despite having the effect of joined pottery clay fragments, through cut-out velvet encrusted on silk organza secured by a sewing technique developed in reverse. Although seemingly stiff, a technique of piecing the material together like the joints in a bone structure allows a wide range of movement and fluidity. With the aim of looking like a piece of archeological treasure, the whole garment is sprinkled with golden strass that look like dust, glistening even with the tiniest sliver of light.
