“We are going to make you wish you were dead.”
#Repost @theebillyporter with @use.repost
If you do not know about our sister Fannie Lou Hamer, I urge you to read all you can about her and please join me in speaking her name.
If you knew, really knew, what people went through to fight for their own right to vote, which has ensured ours, then you would not take your ability to do so for granted.
Mrs. Hamer, along with so many others, faced intimidation, physical violence, beaten just for registering to vote. Registering! Fannie Lou was beaten so badly that she was left with permanent kidney damage and a blood clot behind her eye. She was put out of her home. Even after the Voting Rights Act was passed, people in Mississippi could not vote in Mississippi. The could only vote in national elections. Not for anything local. WE have a bunch of local elections coming up on November 8th. These are the midterm elections. Please vote. If not for yourself, then do it for Fannie Lou.
And yes, during this very testimony that I’m posting, President Johnson himself called an emergency press conference about NOTHING, just to try to silence Mrs. Hamer. But it backfired and her speech was replayed to the nth degree. So you can have SEVERAL seats Mr. LBJ.
I’ll leave with with these words from Mrs. Fannie Lou Hamer, on this her 105th birthday.
“I’m fighting for human rights, not equal rights.”
“I’m sick and tired of being sick and tired.”
Let’s go, y’all. Check your registration, text 3 friends about theirs, and make a plan to vote on November 8.
