In 2018, my friends and I visited @moroccoanimalaid , a rescue in Tamraght, after following their work for over a year. There were sick animals, broken animals, the team was exhausted and there was no garden. I could see the heartbreak reflected in my friends' eyes—they didn't want to see it, it was too hard. And it was hard. Incredibly hard. But alongside that huge heartbreak for the state of the animals and the struggles that the team was going through, I experienced an equal if not bigger sense of dedication to something bigger than themselves—a giving back, a service. All I could think about was how I would love nothing more than work with them and I vividly remember planting that seed, that idea, as we sat back into the rental car and drove towards Marrakech to finish our trip (down the memory lane). I saw a glimpse of the future, a possibility, and it stayed with me until September last year when I was hired for the job of a social media manager for MAA. A literal dream come true. And for years, I dreamt of this, too. To come back and meet everyone—animals and people—in person. Last week, it finally happened. I don't even have the words for the team on the ground. Their dedication, their hard work, their willingness to do anything and everything for these animals goes well beyond words. But here's the thing. We need between 25.000 and 30.000 euros each month to keep it going. We have absolutely no government support. We don't qualify for the majority of the grants and support that is available to animal rescues because we're registered in Morocco. That 25.000 eur somehow magically appears because of amazing supporters and followers via social media but right now, we need to raise 7000 eur to feed all our 500 animals for a month. We need to raise 8500 eur for wages. Not to mention our vet debts.
