In July 2015, I rode the Colorado Trail Race from Durango to Denver in 5d7hrs. It was my first bikepacking and real mountain biking experience. Heading out into the unknown was both challenging and exhilarating, and it reignited the spark in me for old fashioned adventure. The raw grittiness of the ride shifted my perspective to seek out more unconventional objectives outside the parameters of the traditional race context. What I find most compelling about traveling light and on the edge is that this style distills the experience to the essentials, with little obstruction between oneself and the environment, inducing a return to our natural animal state. Seven years after that first ride, I got the itch to revisit that original spirit, and journeyed downstream on the CT, reaching the Junction Creek Trailhead in Durango in 4d21hrs. A glorious and arduous undertaking in celebration of the rain and the old ways.
