In 2019 #BlackPanther costume designer Ruth E. Carter (@therealruthecarter) became the first Black woman to win the Oscar for Best Costume Design for her remarkable designs that brought Afrofuturism to life on screen. Now, with #WakandaForever the Hollywood veteran has expanded the fashion universe even further—underwater to be exact—in the record-breaking sequel that mourns the loss of its star Chadwick Boseman while carrying on his legacy. “This is a woman’s story,” Carter tells W, “It’s Shuri’s story, it’s Ramonda’s story, it’s Nakia’s story, it’s Okoye’s story—and they all have a level of brilliance and adornment to their costumes.” As part of our Costume Confessional series, Carter breaks down each character’s look, from the 3D-printed crowns worn by #AngelaBassett’s Queen Ramonda to Shuri’s (@letitiawright) Adidas tracksuit with a strategic cape.
