My Uncle Pravit passed away Tuesday after a long battle with cancer. Just a couple days before, he shared how excited he was for Taylor and me to get married and wished he could be with us. Uncle Pravit was a dutiful son who dedicated his life to caring for my grandparents until the end. His house in Bangkok was our family house. The first time I met my grandmother was in his house. She was so excited we were in Thailand she took the train from Esan to Bangkok and stayed with us for weeks before we went to my grandparents’ house in Srisaket. My cousin was sent from Esan to go to school Bangkok and lived with him. All us cousins would play together at his house when they got out of school. Eventually everyone moved to Bangkok, and all three generations lived in his house. It was crowded, hot, loud, and perfect. Where I slept in the living room with my dad when it was time to say final goodbyes to my grandparents. Uncle Pravit loved to joke, have a good time, talk business and world events, and cursed like a sailor. He loved us, and taking us around Bangkok. He took me to Wat Arun, the famous Temple of Dawn, when I was young to pray together. It’s why I keep images of the temple around me. He was so proud I got a scholarship to NYU he never took off the NYU shirts I’d give him. He loved @tayloryasuinyc and my friends he got to meet. He, like my dad and mom, taught me what love of family means through care. Taylor and I talked to him about a week ago. He congratulated us and wished us all the best for our marriage. He said he hoped we could visit Bangkok soon. Thailand will feel different without him. My life will feel different without him. But he’s now at peace. And I know he will be with us as we begin our wedding weekend. Thank you to my family in Thailand for sending photos and videos of the funeral. Makes me feel like we’re all together. We love you, Uncle. หลับให้สบาย และขอให้ไปสู่สุคตินะครับ ลูกชายคิดถึง
