What does it mean to be Asian in America? Between a conversation with myself and the team at @goodfight , the challenge of building an identity that represented all of us surfaced as a struggle in answering that very question. What does it mean to be an Asian American collaborating with an Asian American brand? @calvinandhobby depicted "duality" as the narrative of our collaboration. But is duality the truth to the way we depict ourselves through our identity? As Asian Americans we face fatality to exploitation in the portrayal of our dense and varied identities into a singular experience. i.e. "to be Asian means to be communist or completely opposed to communism" or appreciating the narrative of a struggling Asian American in their attempt to break through glass ceilings. We are a collection of identities that are not represented by polarizing Asian icons yet, we are represented in these ways. We exploit ourselves in the societal demand to create a narrative rooted in pain. Duality in our story is ironic. What does it mean to be Asian in America? Irony in duality.
