Frida Kahlo a glissé son autoportrait, peint sur une feuille d’aluminium, derrière un cadre en verre peint à l’envers provenant de Oaxaca. Le tableau a été présenté en 1938, lors de son exposition à la galerie Julien Levy, à New York, puis en 1939, à l'occasion de l’exposition collective Mexique à la galerie Renou et Colle, à Paris. L’État français l’a alors acheté à la galerie, signant ainsi la première acquisition d’une œuvre d’un artiste mexicain. Kahlo inserted her self-portrait, painted on a sheet of aluminium, in a reverse-painted glass frame from Oaxaca. The painting was exhibited in Kahlo’s 1938 New York exhibition at the Julien Levy Gallery and later in 1939 in the group show Mexique at the Galerie Renou et Colle in Paris. The French State bought the painting from the gallery, the first acquisition of a work by a Mexican artist.
